Nature vs. Medicine

The other day in class we had a panel of three women and one man who were advocating for natural and in-home births, saying that giving birth in one's own home eliminates the impersonal, stressful environment of a hospital and allows the child and mother to be in a comfortable, loving environment. In a hospital, the baby is taken from the mother immediately after birth for a check up and supplements which, the panel claimed, are not necessary for a process nature has already perfected.
I was able to see the viewpoint of these people, but I still think they are really kinda crazy. If I were giving birth, I would not want to risk avoidable health problems, I would not want to squat in a bathtub for hours and hours, I would not want to go through excruciating pain which is not necessary, and I would NOT want to eat my placenta.

What do you think?

If I ever give birth, it will definitely be with full pain-reducing medical benefit. No birth tubs... but I might save the placenta and tell someone it's jerky down the line. -Alexis
